"I was a bit of a recorder Nazi at school," she admits, laughing. I used to play at lunchtime and recess, and maybe that was a little uncool, but I loved it." Fifteen years later, at the age of twenty-three, Karlie has emerged - far from uncool - as one of the most accomplished vocalists on the Australian, (if not the world) scene - in 2004, she was selected as one of four finalists in the Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition. As a teenager, she graduated from the recorder to the saxophone and piano, before realising that vocals were her first passion. This led to a double degree at the UNSW; further study at the Sydney Con; tours of Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Europe and the USA; and a multitude of performances at Australia's most prestigious venues, from supporting Michael Buble at The Basement to concerts at the Opera House. Over the past three years, Karlie has been working towards the release of her debut album, to be launched this week. The album was born at the Wine Banq, where Karlie was invited to perform a series of gigs during March 2002."We did a whole month of gigs," explains Karlie."John (Harkins, the pianist) and Jonathan (Zwartz, the bassist) wrote some beautiful arrangements. So, we decided to put them all together and do the CD. It wasn't supposed to be an album in the first place, but we were really enjoying what we were doing, so we recorded it." The whole process was entirely new to Karlie, but invaluable. "You listen back to what you've recorded and you think, 'Is that really me?' It reveals everything you like and everything you don't like about your voice." Following the album's launch, Karlie intends to take her mellifluous tone and langurous sounds overseas, to play gigs in the US, Europe and Japan. "I love travelling," she says. "I just want to go everywhere and sing everywhere. I want to learn a lot and see where it takes me. To be able to travel, to be on the road, singing, doing my own thing...that's how i want to live, and i'm lucky to be able to do it."
